3/23 UPDATE:
So today has been spent editing, updating and collaborating. I have gotten feedback from clinicians, academics, and researchers. The Academy of Pediatric PT has supported us in review of this document. We know that more USDOE guidance is coming out tomorrow and we will send a finalized version tomorrow. Some of the key definitions reported could be changed and we want to reflect that so you have the most accurate information available. If you have an urgent or pressing need, just email me and I am glad to be of assistance. I will post the updated document tomorrow.
3/23/2020: Its been a day! I have spent the last 48 hours being really concerned and worried at what may happen with physical therapy in schools. Specifically, I have been contacted by a number of PTs asking me for guidance. I also had a few leadership meetings with Virginia Physical Therapy Association leadership this weekend...
A school colleague of mine and I decided to write the model that we think we should practice under, because no practice model exists, and no way of thinking exists. Our role within schools is clearly defined by laws and evidence. We know our students make progress and we know how to support them, and we are ever in search of the best methods.
But, today, when most schools are shut down and so many therapists are struggling to figure out what they should do, in many cases told what they should do, and we know those students are sitting at home waiting for us. Their teachers and parents need us to support their education. They need to connect with us. And there are so many ways to do this. But we need to think outside the box and define our practice with what we know works, be prepared to learn new things that will work and also find that some stuff won't work.
Although we have never worked together, Michele Wiley and I are long time friends and colleagues and we had no idea that we could even doing this. We are calling this a draft, because Michele and I have both been trained to write in a way that meets an academic standard. But we don't have time for that and we know that you don't either. A lot of you have to present what you will do tomorrow or are being told what you should do tomorrow, and some of you are questioning what the heck you are doing at all.
Please send me feedback, so we can edit. If we didnt address something, let us know. This is being shared in every venue that we know of and every social media outlet we are connected with, please share it. We think this will help you.
We look forward to hearing from you. The document is here, please share and disseminate widely.
